A Shelby Township man has been charged with five felony counts for embezzling money from a youth baseball charity.

Joseph Wallace Wolf Jr., 51, faces up to 50 years in prison for allegedly embezzling more than $20,000 from the Shelby Township-based Detroit Metro Stars youth baseball team between 2012 and 2014.

According to police, Wolf used the money to buy a car, travel to Florida, pay his mother’s monthly telephone bills, make a house payment and pay personal vehicle repair bills for himself and other family members.

The money was raised at millionaire parties, otherwise known as charity poker or casino-style events. Attendees are able to pocket a small portion of their winnings, with the selected charity receiving the rest.

Millionaire parties are governed by the Michigan Gaming Control Board, which was a partner in the investigation with the state attorney general’s office.

The Detroit Metro Stars held 32 days of charity poker in 2012 and 2013 at The River, a Shelby Township bar. As part of the investigation, the team will not be able to conduct charity gaming until the organization proves it can follow proper financial control, the gaming board said.

Wolf has been charged with five counts of felony embezzlement of $1,000 to less than $20,000 from a nonprofit organization. Each count is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and/or a fine of either $15,000 or triple the embezzled amount if that amount was greater than $15,000.

Wolf was released on a $50,000 personal bond and is due to appear for a probable cause conference Aug. 20 in the 41A District Court in Shelby Township.

This year the gaming control board also investigated two other Macomb County youth charities, the Clinton Valley Little League in Clinton Township and the Switzer Elementary PTO in Shelby Township, after principal members of those organizations were charged with embezzlement of charity gaming proceeds.
